About Africa

Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most-populated continent, after Asia. At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq miles) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of the ’s total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area. With 1 billion people, it accounts for about 14.72% of the world’s human population.

History
Africa’s history has often come under scrutiny as civil wars have plagued the continent over hundreds of years, and still persist in this present day. However, no one can deny the beauty of the African continent which boasts wildlife of many kinds.

Early immigration to the African continent as been recorded at around 60,000 B.C. Arabs from the Middle East largely settled amongst the north of Africa, which is where many of them are still located today.

In the middle eastern region of Africa, are countries such as, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, poverty is at it’s peak. Many people living in these regions are affected by a lack of clean water and thousands die due to this awful state. Despite the environment which these people live in, many are religious and live a life centred towards a God of some kind. They rest their morals upon hope and a desire to provide their family with a longer life than themselves.

South Africa is home to many English/Australian immigrants. With over 60% of the population of White origin, that figure demonstrates the amount of immigrants which have fled to this region of Africa. Many early settlers came to the ‘Cape of Good Hope’ where they have since spread northwards into countries such as, Zimbabwe.

People
Africa is home to people of many different backgrounds and origins. Many of whom live in deserts, some live in forests and of course, some live in the cities. The people are often warm, humble, kind and have a great passion for the land of their inheritance. Much of the activities which African people are involved in are centred around the family- the family unit is essential for most African people.

Travel
Africa is home to beautiful scenery and possesses history (good and bad) throughout. Many people travel to Africa each year to explore its wonders and the adventure it brings. From visiting north of Africa, holidaying in places such as, Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria are amongst other countries where holiday resorts are prevalent throughout. Backpackers and travellers alike tend to opt for a more spontaneous adventure visiting the vast desert land which Africa possesses. Lions, rhinos, giraffes and many more animals of this nature can be seen up close in these areas of the continent.

Best Africa Volunteer Organizations

If you are looking to volunteer abroad it’s important to apply with a reputable company. There are some really incredible international agencies, NGO’s and charities, but there are also some companies that aren’t reputable and which you should avoid.

Some so called not-for-profit organizations work with ulterior for profit motives rather than helping good causes. Thus, it is essential to dig into the credentials as the company you apply with could be the difference between an unpleasant experience and a life changing one.

Popular Projects

Work with Children
You have the opportunity to help children in need. Children who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, children who have been abused by their parents and children whose parents are not able to provide for them. These kids need love, attention, life skills, and education so they can have successful futures free from poverty and filled with the same opportunities as others.

As a volunteer you will be a mentor by becoming a big brother or sister to kids in a children’s home. You will work alongside local staff to help with classroom teaching and homework help, childcare, and the daily operational running of the home. Volunteers are also encouraged to initiate their own work by organizing arts and crafts, music, dance, games, sports activities, and day trips for the children.

This role is suitable for a caring, motivated, and self-directed person who has a love for children and ideally has childcare experience.

Teach
Quality education for both boys and girls is crucial in reducing poverty and promoting gender equality. Schools in Africa are currently struggling with overcrowded classes and a lack of skilled teachers. As a volunteer you will help to empower girls and boys by giving them the skills they need to overcome poverty and to make their voice heard.

There are opportunities for volunteers to assist with teaching at primary and secondary levels, where volunteer teachers can teach core subjects, such as English, mathematics, science, social sciences, and can initiate extra-curricular activities.

This role is suitable for caring, motivated, and self-directed people. A teaching qualification is not required (except for some secondary teaching placements) but volunteers need to be confident in the above subjects and preferably have or be studying towards a university degree.

Medical/Health
Malaria, typhoid, pneumonia, and tetanus are treatable diseases, yet many still die as a result of not receiving proper medical care. Government-run hospitals and medical clinics are ill-equipped to handle the volume of people in need of care. As a medically qualified volunteer you can help by sharing your medical skills and working alongside local staff to provide those in need with basic medical care. Volunteers have the opportunity to work in the areas of general medical practice, maternal health, minor surgery, and laboratory work. This role is suitable for self-directed, caring people who are medically qualified.

HIV/AIDS Prevention/Assistance
Countries in Africa have been hit hard by the HIV/AIDS epidemic with millions of adults and children infected. The aim of the HIV/AIDS program is to decrease the spread of HIV through raising awareness and education, but to also increase access to homecare, and to provide emotional support to those affected by HIV/AIDS within the community.

Volunteers have the opportunity to work in a community HIV/AIDS organization to assist with homecare visits to HIV positive people, and educate and counsel community and school groups and individuals. This role is suitable for a caring, motivated, and self-directed person. Medical training is not necessary for all aspects of the program, but a background in HIV/AIDS and basic health care is required.

FAQ

What age do you have to be to volunteer?
You usually must be 18 years old and above. The upper age limit is 65, however volunteers who are older than this are considered on a case by case basis.

What clothing is appropriate for the program?
Considering the climate and culture, we recommend light coloured, cotton clothing that covers most of your body. The locals love to wear bright, bold colours so you will do well wearing the same. And the added bonus is that bright, busy patterns hide the ever-present dirt which is impossible to evade! Women should avoid wearing shorts as legs need to be covered. Something below the knee like capri pants or long skirts are fine. Comfortable sturdy footwear, as well as a pair of sandals/jandals for light walking, is also recommended. Don’t forget sunglasses, a hat, and a sweater to keep warm in the evenings.

Do I need a police background check to volunteer in this program?
Yes, all volunteers in this program will be required to provide a police clearance document. This is because volunteers will be working closely with children and other vulnerable individuals. To obtain a police clearance you will need to contact your local police station to find out what their procedure is. Normally, you will be asked to complete an application form authorizing the check to be done, pay a fee and a few weeks later the check will arrive in the mail. A copy of your police clearance will need to be sent before your placement begins and you will need to take the original with you when you volunteer.

Will I get time to go sightseeing?
