Language
Most programs require participants to be able to speak English. It is though polite to learn at least the basics of the local language in the country you intend to travel to, this will also impress the locals and make integration easier. You could use apps like Duolingo to get started, and remember even just hello, please and thank you will be appreciated.
Do I need a visa?
If your stay in most countries for 28 days or less, you may not need a visa. If your stay is more, you will need to obtain a Foreign Tourist Visa prior or after arrival. Volunteers may obtain visas from embassies, consulates or borders.
